The Economic Journey
The Economic Journey ("The Journey") takes each participant on a journey that will lead to economic self-sufficiency; for others, increased economic resiliency and housing stability. The Sullivan Center will offer a deeper and more sustained relationship for each participant, through their economic crisis, but one that leads to a longer and more sustained transformation. We will create supportive relationships and help clients progressively expand their goals and aspirations. Each person that goes on "The Journey" will learn how to earn it, keep it, and grow it. Earn it: by acquiring the skills needed for advanced placement in the workplace. Keep it: by improving their ability to make ends meet, protect their earning, and stretch their dollars. Grow it: by fostering savings and building assets to allow them to pay off debt, establish credit, secure a fair-priced mortgage, car loan or insurance, contribute to their children’s education and save for retirement.
The Journey focuses on financial assistance coupled with education. The education has and continues to be a vitally important feature of the program. Participants learn new skills in personal and household budgeting that help them meet monthly budgets. One example is that through our “Nutrition” class, also known as “How to Shop Smart at the Grocery Store”, clients learn and put into practice buying good, healthy food items and use provided recipes to make great meals. Once clients complete the educational requirements The Sullivan Center releases the dollars to assist them with either their rent or utility payment.
